Offspring of Ex- South African Leader Zuma Denies Terrorism Allegations as Legal Proceedings Begins

The offspring of previous South African Leader Zuma has denied all charges to terror charges at the beginning of her trial in the harbor city of Durban.

The defendant, 43 years old, is being tried over statements she made on online platforms in the past during deadly unrest in South Africa that occurred subsequent to the arrest of her father.

A seven-day period of anarchy in several parts of the country in mid-2021, including looting and arson, left at least three hundred killed and resulted in damage worth an estimated $2.8 billion (£2.2bn).

Zuma-Sambudla has been accused of inciting this turmoil and faces accusations of encouragement to commit terrorism and public disorder.

Background of the Case

The protests were centered in the areas of the Gauteng province and KwaZulu-Natal and were triggered by the former president's detention for disobeying a judicial ruling to give evidence at an inquiry into allegations of graft while he was serving as president.

She has consistently refuted the allegations against her, with her attorney in the past describing the state's evidence as insufficient.

She has also consistently said the allegations against her were an effort to address political scores with her father after he founded his own political party and campaigned against the ANC.

This was echoed by the foundation, which said the legal matter was an "power abuse" and a "systematic campaign" of "political and kinship targeting" against the previous head of state and his family.

A handful of backers from her party, uMkhonto weSizwe, turned up outside the KwaZulu-Natal high court, while her father and other group representatives attended the court sessions inside.

The defendant's representatives has argued that the evidence presented by government lawyers is unconvincing and does not have compelling evidence for a guilty verdict.
