New York state AG has rolled out a recent digital platform urging locals to share images and footage of federal immigration enforcement across the state. This step comes just a day after a major ICE raid disrupted Chinatown in Manhattan, prompting large-scale outcry.
A US congressman revealed during a midweek briefing that four American citizens were detained and kept for "almost a full day" following Tuesday's raid. Demonstrations erupted in the city on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.
"Each citizen is entitled to exist without intimidation," the AG stated in a release.
"Anyone who observed and captured immigration enforcement recently, I urge you to provide that material with my office. We are pledged to reviewing these accounts and investigating any wrongdoings."
The form provides fields to submit visual evidence of the incident, along with a field to indicate geographic details. Before submitting, users must mark a option that confirms that "the attorney general could utilize any evidence provided in a legal proceeding, including in a lawsuit or public report."
The Manhattan operation, which onlookers say included over fifty government officers, took place in a popular neighborhood of the city where counterfeit products and other goods are regularly available en masse – frequently to visitors.
Recordings of the incident show numerous covered and weaponized personnel zip-tying and detaining a person, and forcing aside witnesses. Masses of locals followed the officers through the streets. An armored truck was noticed traveling down the Manhattan avenues.
In a news conference organized with the New York immigrant rights coalition, the congressman, a Democrat, stated that four American citizens were taken by federal agents for about 24 hours and that there were "no conditions where nationals should be detained for unjustly." He noted the citizens were let go on Wednesday with no charges filed.
"There's a clear purpose here. It is not about removing offenders," he stated. "This represents a armed campaign to create conflict. It is simply a excuse to provoke conflict for this administration to utilize the military to prevent violence that they themselves caused."
Anger over the ICE raid rapidly grew – each of the political contenders denounced the raid, along with the state leader.
"Once again, the Trump administration opts for heavy-handed tactics that create fear, not safety. It has to end," a contender declared.
NYC advocacy organizations voiced concern as well.
"Immigration agents descended on the neighborhood with military-style vehicles, covered personnel and tactical gear to target local sellers attempting to earn income. This raid had no relation to community security and everything to do with terrorizing immigrant families and areas," stated the head of a major immigrant coalition.
Agency rules forbids the holding of citizens and the bureau has claimed it refrains from arrest or detain American nationals. However, investigative journalism has discovered that more than 170 US citizens have been detained unlawfully by ICE since the start of the current administration.
Enforcement actions have been becoming more common in the state and nationwide recently.
An October operation in the city center was the first known raid on an immigrant shelter of the present government. Protests targeting federal operations are commonplace along with allegations of aggression and abusive practices.
Latest, a document filed by advocacy organizations alleged inadequate care of expectant mothers in government custody.
