Manchester United are finalising sealing the deal for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
Schüller, who has half a year remaining on her contract, has been a prolific goalscorer for both club and country. She has scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. Her arrival will be seen as a major coup for the WSL team.
Her exit from Munich was expected after she was seen holding back emotions while applauding the German club’s supporters after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
It was reported in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its top forwards. Per reports, the formalities for the move have now been completed.
The experienced striker's signing should represent a significant uplift to United’s forward line. She has been highly consistent with her finishing in the Bundesliga.
Securing the German international coincides with a period when United seem to be building momentum.
Their recent performances feature qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the winter break has brought additional business:
On the midfielder's extension, a senior figure stated: “She has become a critical component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill allows her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has joined from a club in the NWSL, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
