In October of last year, the late-night programming block welcomed back its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the network launched a completely new animated series with a strikingly different feel. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, evoking a cartoon version of a serene talk show. During a period often defined by bleakness, this show's sincerity resonated deeply and turned it into a surprise hit.
On December 18th, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose primary trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four central characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the fans of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," stated Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Accompanying the news commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He thanked the fans who found the show and advocated for its uniquely offbeat style.
"All of you supported this new show, praised it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something deeply soothing about following this lovable family navigate their everyday routines.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa shared his goal to move the comedy genre beyond its long-running cynical streak. He linked this trend to a broader media landscape.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we are trapped in,” noted Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa may well help usher in that comedic shift. Or at the very least, the renewal guarantees audiences a little more time to bask in the heartfelt moments of the endearing Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The entire series is available for streaming on HBO Max.
