The ships named Friendship and Tigger Moth departed Isla Mujeres, Mexico on 20 March.

A extensive search and recovery effort is actively under way in the Caribbean waters for two missing sailboats loaded with aid cargo journeying from the Mexican coast to Cuba.

Naval Rescue Efforts Deployed

Mexico has dispatched naval teams and military search aircraft to search for the missing boats, which were transporting no fewer than 9 personnel, per a military release.

The boats had been scheduled to reach Havana on the early part of the week, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and zero verification of their safe arrival, the navy said.

Context of Relief to Cuba

The island nation has depended significantly on Mexico's over recent weeks, as the nation endures repeated nationwide blackouts.

"Both crews and captains are seasoned mariners, and the two ships are outfitted with proper safety equipment and communication devices," a spokesperson associated with the mission stated.

The nine individuals on board are nationals of France, Poland, the United States, and Cuba. Mexican authorities said it has opened communications with coast guard agencies from the involved countries along with their embassy officials.

"We are working closely with the officials and continue to be hopeful in the crews' ability to make it to Cuba without incident," the official further stated.

Recent Humanitarian Delivery

Earlier in the week, the Cuban government warmly welcomed and warmly received a different ship that had transported 14 tonnes of donated goods to the island.

That vessel, dubbed "a new Granma" following the name of the yacht in which Fidel Castro came back to Cuba to start the revolution in the mid-20th century, delivered photovoltaic panels, drugs, baby formula, bikes and food.

Broader International Context

Volunteers and NGOs have largely spearheaded initiatives to bring critical assistance to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, coinciding with the time a fuel embargo on the country was initiated.

Global bodies have since raised alarms about "dire" lack of essential goods, with more than fifty thousand surgeries cancelled in Cuba due to electricity supply constraints.

Political tensions have increased over the past months, with statements from different leaders underscoring the complicated state of diplomatic ties.

Reacting to recent proposals, a senior government figure stated firmly that "the governance model of Cuba is not up for negotiation."

Accounts suggest that initial phases of negotiations had begun, although their ongoing development remains uncertain.

The maritime authorities affirmed it was pledged to using every available asset at its disposal to find the vessels and guarantee the well-being of the crews.

As of now, there has been silence on the disappeared vessels by the Cuban leadership.
